Prime Minister Mark Carney, alongside a group of world leaders gathered in South Africa, released a joint statement on Saturday expressing that additional efforts will be needed to implement U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. The discussion took place on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg, with a focus on addressing the challenges faced by Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the critical juncture his nation is currently navigating.

Zelenskyy is under pressure from Trump to either accept or reject the peace plan, which has raised concerns among the leaders present regarding the potential implications of such a decision. The shared statement emphasized the importance of upholding the principle that borders should not be altered through force and raised reservations about the suggested restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities, which could leave the country vulnerable to future incursions.

Trump’s 28-point proposal includes provisions that would require Kyiv to relinquish territory, impose limits on its armed forces, and abandon aspirations to join NATO, aligning with longstanding demands from the Kremlin. However, the plan also introduces elements that Russia may find unfavorable, such as the withdrawal of its military from certain occupied regions in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy addressed the nation through a video message, expressing the intense pressure exerted by Trump’s ultimatum and outlining the difficult choices Ukraine may face. The meeting in South Africa was attended by representatives from Canada, European countries, Japan, and others who reaffirmed their support for Ukraine in the midst of these critical deliberations.

Trump clarified that his current peace proposal for Ukraine is not final, emphasizing the imperative of ending the conflict. However, global affairs analyst Michael Bociurkiw criticized the plan as detrimental to Ukraine’s sovereignty, warning against any compromise that could jeopardize the country’s independence.

Carney, in partnership with international allies, pledged to work closely with Ukraine and the U.S. in the days ahead to advance a just and enduring peace agreement. Bilateral discussions between Carney and various leaders underscored the commitment to supporting Ukraine’s interests and ensuring its active involvement in any settlement process.

The G20 summit, hosted by South Africa, witnessed leaders addressing pressing global issues, including climate change, in a declaration that drew criticism from a White House official for allegedly excluding U.S. input. The ongoing negotiations surrounding the Ukraine conflict have underscored the complex diplomatic challenges faced by the international community in seeking a resolution beneficial to all parties involved.
