A 10-year-old boy named David Sills from Bishop’s Falls recently took part in the provincial disc golf championships held in Corner Brook. The event gathered around 60 disc golf enthusiasts facing challenging winds during the competition.

Johnston Miller, the president of Corner Brook Disc Golf, played a crucial role in introducing the sport to western Newfoundland during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Since the installation of the first public course in Stephenville five years ago, the sport has been steadily gaining popularity across the island.

Disc golf courses can now be found in various locations such as St. John’s, Corner Brook, and Stephenville, with a new permanent course set to open in Gander later this year. Daniel Henderson, the president of Disc Golf N.L., highlighted the significant growth of the sport over the past five years, especially in the recent year leading up to the provincial championship.

Henderson emphasized the accessibility of disc golf, requiring only a single Frisbee to play and offering free courses to the public on the island. Participants like David and Rob Sills expressed their enthusiasm for the sport, sharing their experiences of setting up makeshift courses and enjoying the physical activity and fun it provides.

The positive reception of disc golf in Newfoundland has attracted attention from players outside the province, with Miller envisioning the potential for Newfoundland to become a premier disc golf destination due to its natural landscapes and resources.

Overall, the disc golf community in Newfoundland and Labrador is optimistic about the sport’s future growth and the possibility of establishing the region as a world-class disc golf destination.
