The federal government has allocated $2.2 million to renovate 56 affordable rental units throughout Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), aiming to enhance support for the Indigenous community on the island. This funding, facilitated by the federal Affordable Housing Fund, offers low-interest and forgivable loans to organizations engaged in constructing or renovating units for affordable housing.

During a recent announcement in Charlottetown, MP Sean Casey highlighted the significance of this initiative, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on vulnerable segments of the community, particularly Indigenous women and children. The funding was directed to the Nanegkam Housing Corporation, a venture managed by the Native Council of P.E.I., which oversees 56 rental units including duplexes, apartments, and single-family homes in various locations such as Murray Harbour, Summerside, and Charlottetown.

David Rooney, the housing manager at Nanegkam Housing Corporation, mentioned the urgent need for upgrades in many of the units under their management. Several renovations are underway or already completed, with tenants expressing satisfaction with the outcomes. The federal funding has enabled crucial improvements to enhance safety and efficiency, including the installation of heat pumps, upgrades to electrical panels, roof and foundation repairs, and the transition to propane boilers for heating.

Rooney emphasized the positive feedback from tenants, noting that the renovations have significantly improved living conditions and mental well-being. Approximately half of the units have rents below the average market rate in Charlottetown, providing affordable housing options below $1,000 per month. MP Casey acknowledged the challenging housing situation in P.E.I., stressing the importance of addressing affordability issues, especially for vulnerable groups like Indigenous individuals and families.
