A seismic event of magnitude 5.6 has occurred beneath the ocean off the coast of Vancouver Island. According to Earthquakes Canada, the tremor occurred at 11:41 p.m. PT on Sunday, approximately 219 kilometers southwest of Port Hardy at the northern tip of the island. The earthquake’s depth was approximately 10 kilometers below the sea floor, with the federal agency confirming no threat of a tsunami.
The epicenter of the earthquake is in close proximity to several significant communities on Vancouver Island, including Campbell River, located around 300 kilometers away, and Port Alberni situated 330 kilometers away. Reports indicate that the seismic activity was felt as far as Metro Vancouver, over 450 kilometers southeast of the epicenter, with reports of shaking also coming from northern Vancouver Island.
