Residents in Hamilton are expressing concerns over ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s environmental impact and emissions exceeding Ontario’s air-quality standards. Jochen Bezner, a local resident, along with another individual, has called for an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Parks (MECP) into Dofasco’s alleged emission of harmful pollutants at levels surpassing regulatory thresholds.
Bezner emphasized the importance of holding Dofasco accountable for its emissions without necessarily shutting down the operations. The request for investigation was submitted by Ecojustice, an environmental law charity, and a Hamilton lawyer, citing the potential health risks posed by the steelmaker’s emissions.
Hamilton, already known for its heavy industries and cancer-causing air pollutants such as benzene and benzo[a]pyrene, has a high concentration of contaminants. Bezner stressed the need to avoid further exacerbating the situation.
Dofasco, which previously operated under exemptions allowing higher emissions, did not renew these exemptions when they expired in June 2023. This decision put the company in a regulatory “grey zone,” prompting concerns about compliance with air-quality standards.
Ecojustice highlighted that Dofasco’s emissions report for 2023 revealed significant exceedances of allowable contaminant levels, including benzo[a]pyrene, benzene, sulfur dioxide, and manganese compounds. The company’s reluctance to disclose its 2022 emissions report has raised additional questions about transparency.
The company’s decarbonization efforts have also come under scrutiny, with stakeholders questioning its progress towards reducing air pollution. Despite commitments to decarbonize its steel plant by 2028, Dofasco has faced delays in meeting key milestones, such as the demolition of its coke plant.
MECP is expected to respond to the investigation request in the near future, with ministry spokesperson Gary Wheeler emphasizing the need for facilities exceeding air quality standards to take corrective actions. The lack of progress in Dofasco’s decarbonization project has raised concerns among residents and environmental advocates, who urge stricter regulations to drive the company towards compliance.
As Dofasco navigates challenges such as high U.S. tariffs impacting the steel industry, the company remains cautious about its expenditures. The community awaits updates on the decarbonization project, which is viewed as pivotal for Dofasco’s future sustainability and environmental responsibility.
