“Canada’s Race for Rocket Independence Amid SpaceX Shift”

Share

Canada, lacking its own rocket launch capabilities, is striving to develop a Canadian-made rocket as other nations in the G7 have done. Several Canadian companies are in a race to provide the country with independent access to space, amid concerns that industry giant SpaceX might reduce its launch services.

The rocket companies are facing challenges such as high costs, tight deadlines, and shifting government priorities in their quest to achieve this goal. Due to Canada’s reliance on external providers for launching satellites, notably SpaceX which launched all 12 Canadian satellites in 2025, the need for domestic launch capabilities is emphasized.

Critical applications like telecommunications, military operations, and earth observation rely on these satellites. Marc Boucher, founder of SpaceQ, highlights the importance of Canada having its own launch capabilities to safeguard its technology from potential foreign restrictions.

The Canadian government has recognized space as a strategic sovereign capability and introduced legislation to enable launches from Canadian soil. Funding has been allocated to support three Canadian companies working on rocket projects, with the aim of achieving light-lift rocket capabilities by 2028.

NordSpace, one of the companies receiving funding, faced initial setbacks in its rocket test launch but plans to retry soon. Reaction Dynamics is another company working on unique engine designs, both aiming to reach orbit by 2028. The newest player, Canada Rocket Company, is focused on building a medium-lift rocket with private and public funding support.

While SpaceX plans to phase out its Falcon 9 rocket in favor of the larger Starship, emerging rocket makers see an opportunity to fill the gap. Canadian satellite communications company Kepler, a frequent Falcon 9 user, and other smaller players may be affected by SpaceX’s transition.

The importance of having a Canadian rocket manufacturer is emphasized as SpaceX shifts focus, leaving potential market opportunities. The journey to establish a Canadian rocket industry involves significant funding and long-term commitment, with private and public investments crucial for success.

As the industry progresses, challenges remain, including the need for sustained funding and continued government support. The path to regular rocket launches from Canada is seen as a long-term endeavor requiring perseverance and substantial financial backing.
