“Mount Semeru Erupts: Villages Evacuated, Alert at Max”

Indonesia’s highest peak on Java island, Mount Semeru, erupted on Wednesday, releasing ash that covered nearby villages, leading to evacuations and the raising of the alert level to the highest degree. The eruption, which included hot ash, rocks, lava, and gas, resulted in multiple occurrences throughout the day, with the volcano spewing searing clouds that traveled several kilometers down its slopes and a two-kilometer high column of hot clouds. The Geology Agency of Indonesia reported the events and noted no casualties so far.

In response to the escalating volcanic activity, authorities raised the alert level of Mount Semeru twice, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Over 300 residents from at-risk villages in Lumajang were relocated to government shelters for safety. The danger zone was expanded to eight kilometers from the crater due to heightened volcanic activity, particularly along the path of the lava flow near the Besuk Kobokan River.

Videos circulating on social media captured the dense ash cloud sweeping through a forested area towards a river below a bridge, prompting residents to seek refuge in temporary shelters or relocate to safer zones. Reports indicated that approximately 178 individuals, including climbers, porters, guides, and tourism officials, were stranded at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post on the 3,676-meter mountain. Despite being safe at the monitoring post, unfavorable weather conditions forced them to spend the night there.

Mount Semeru, also known as Mahameru, has a history of eruptions over the past two centuries. The last significant eruption occurred in December 2021, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries, along with the evacuation of thousands of residents and the relocation of houses out of harm’s way. Indonesia, with its vast population and geographical location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” remains susceptible to seismic activities and volcanic eruptions.
