Wheelchair Tennis Star Rob Shaw Announces Retirement

Wheelchair tennis player Rob Shaw is set to retire following his participation in the Australian Open, as announced by Tennis Canada on Tuesday. Hailing from North Bay, Ontario, the 36-year-old has predominantly competed in the quad division, tailored for athletes with a permanent physical disability impacting their upper extremities and at least three other limbs.

Throughout his career, Shaw has secured an impressive total of 54 ITF titles, comprising 25 in singles and 29 in doubles, making him the Canadian with the highest number of combined titles. Notably, he clinched 10 titles at the Birmingham Nationals. In terms of rankings, Shaw achieved a career-high No. 6 in singles and No. 3 in doubles, both accomplished in 2023.

Shaw’s ascent in the sport began in 2022 when he broke into the top eight, earning a spot in his inaugural Grand Slam at the U.S. Open. He notably finished as a runner-up in doubles alongside American player David Wagner. In 2023, Shaw secured two more second-place finishes in doubles at both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, partnering with Australian player Heath Davidson.

On the international stage, Shaw’s achievements include a gold medal at the 2019 Para Pan American Games and a silver in 2023. He also competed in the Paralympic Games in 2021 and 2024, reaching the quarterfinals in singles play.

Shaw’s final Grand Slam appearance will be at the upcoming event on January 27, marking his 11th participation. Following his retirement, he will transition to a part-time role as a Wheelchair Tennis high performance consultant with Tennis Canada.
