Legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, who left Canada over six decades ago, has recently gained U.S. citizenship. Mitchell, 82 years old, shared the news through Instagram and X, showcasing a photo and video from her naturalization ceremony. The image captures Mitchell in a red beret and sunglasses, holding a small American flag, with a video showing her receiving applause at the ceremony.

Originally born as Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alta., in 1943, Mitchell relocated to the U.S. during the mid-1960s due to her marriage to American musician Chuck Mitchell. She resided in Detroit, New York, and later settled in California, becoming a prominent figure in the Laurel Canyon music scene. Although she now lives in Santa Barbara, Calif., she also maintains a residence in British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.

Mitchell, known for iconic songs like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” as well as her acclaimed 1971 album “Blue,” has transitioned from a folk singer in Toronto to one of the most influential songwriters globally. With 19 studio albums, she has received numerous honors, including 11 Grammys, five Juno Awards, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The news of Mitchell’s U.S. citizenship has sparked interest given her vocal political stances. At a 2024 Hollywood Bowl performance, Mitchell criticized then-U.S. President Donald Trump and encouraged voting, expressing her wish to vote in the U.S. despite being Canadian. The decision for citizenship does not signify a break from her Canadian roots, as Canada and the U.S. allow dual citizenship.

Reactions to Mitchell’s citizenship have been mixed on social media, with some celebrating the news while others questioned the timing, especially considering her criticism of Trump. Despite the varied responses, Mitchell’s impact on music and culture remains profound, with plans for a biopic detailing her life story reportedly in development, featuring director Cameron Crowe and actress Meryl Streep.
