Mayor Olivia Chow announced on Thursday that the city is currently investigating an incident where a contractor drove a small snowplow through a group of pro-Palestinian protesters on a sidewalk in Toronto. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported during the chaotic event, as confirmed by Chow in her statement to reporters.
City spokesperson Russell Baker stated that the contractor was conducting a “dry run” in preparation for the upcoming winter season when the incident occurred. Baker expressed disappointment in the contractor’s behavior, emphasizing that it did not align with the city’s values and expectations for contractors working on behalf of Toronto.
The occurrence took place on Tuesday evening outside the U.S. consulate on University Avenue while Toronto police officers were monitoring the protest. Videos circulating on social media captured the moment when the contractor drove their orange Kubota tractor through the crowd on the sidewalk, prompting reactions from protesters who attempted to clear the way.
An image from the scene showed the driver making an offensive gesture towards the crowd. Omar Mahmoud, one of the protesters present, shared his account of the fear he felt as the plow approached during their demonstration demanding changes to the U.S. plan for Gaza.
A&F Di Carlo Construction, the company associated with the vehicle, responded to the incident through spokesperson Fausto Di Carlo, explaining that the driver, a trained and experienced individual, acted out of concern for her personal safety during the event. The company acknowledged the driver’s inappropriate gesture and expressed regret for the incident, noting that they have reported the matter to the city and are cooperating to prevent such incidents in the future.
Although Toronto police officers intervened at the scene, the driver was not charged following the incident. Videos showed the driver speaking with officers after being pulled over, with police confirming that no charges have been filed and no injuries were reported. Police emphasized that without any formal complaints or victims coming forward, there is currently no basis for further investigation.
Mahmoud voiced distrust in the police’s ability to protect the Palestinian community in Toronto and questioned why the driver was not arrested, expressing concern over the perceived lack of action in response to the incident. The ongoing investigation aims to address the concerns raised by the protesters and ensure accountability for all parties involved.
