Bank of Montreal’s CEO, Darryl White, has raised concerns about the trustworthiness of artificial intelligence agents when it comes to handling personal banking information. During the Toronto Global Forum, White highlighted the rapid advancement of AI technology outpacing regulatory safeguards. This comes after RBC’s CEO mentioned the possibility of restricting Meta’s Muse AI agent from accessing client data at his bank.

White emphasized the need for better awareness among individuals, cautioning against sharing sensitive information like banking usernames, passwords, credit card details, social insurance numbers, and PINs as they lack adequate protection. He stressed the importance of educating the public on these risks.

Canada’s major banks have heavily invested in artificial intelligence in recent years. BMO’s insurance division, for example, now utilizes AI to expedite underwriting decisions, reducing the process to as little as 10 seconds compared to the industry’s previous 28-day standard.

AI agents such as Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s ChatGPT can assist clients by monitoring account balances and transactions with authorization, offering spending tips, and requiring human validation for purchases. RBC’s CEO, Dave McKay, has indicated considering blocking Muse from accessing client data to balance consumer needs with privacy and system security. Similarly, other banking giants like JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Charles Schwab have taken steps to restrict external AI agents from accessing their clients’ data.
