Waterloo, long recognized as a technology hub, is hosting a new week-long event to showcase the city’s innovative work in engaging ways with the community. Waterloo Tech Week is scheduled from September 8 to 11, featuring four days of panels, demonstrations, and meetups. The event seamlessly transitions into the 12th annual Hack the North event, incorporating a gamification element this year.
Jasmine Jiang, one of the event’s organizers, mentioned that 40 diverse events are set to take place across the city. The aim is to create an inclusive opportunity for community members to participate, connect with new individuals, and delve into topics they may not have explored previously.
The event lineup includes interactive sessions such as speed friending with tech, insights on building a career as a product designer, discussions on the future of software in the era of AI, internship talks, alumni panels, government funding strategies, and a fireside chat on Bitcoin. Notably, the Bitcoin fireside chat will be led by the chief technology officer of Atomic Finance, sponsored by the Wilfrid Laurier Bitcoin Club. Attendees can expect technical discussions on Bitcoin facilitated by industry expert Matt Black, a UW alumni with a startup venture.
In addition to the engaging sessions, attendees can participate in a city-wide treasure hunt using a mobile app, enjoy a “brewed connections” happy hour, engage in a chess bot tournament, partake in a startup competition, and network during a student entrepreneur lunch event. Daily discussions will revolve around AI, focusing on ethical considerations and the evolving role of engineers in shaping AI-driven technology.
Most of the events are free of charge, with registration required through the Waterloo Tech Week website to secure a spot.
