Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially appointed David Lametti as Canada’s next ambassador to the United Nations. Carney stated that the new government aims to enhance and broaden international partnerships by relying on capable leaders to represent Canada’s strength in a rapidly changing global landscape.

CBC News initially reported on Wednesday that David Lametti, the former justice minister, would be leaving the Prime Minister’s Office to take on a diplomatic role. Lametti previously served as justice minister under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from 2019 to 2023 and later resigned from Parliament in 2024.

Having recently worked as Carney’s principal secretary, Lametti shares a history with the Prime Minister, having played hockey together at the University of Oxford. He is set to succeed Bob Rae as Canada’s UN representative on Nov. 17, with Rae offering congratulations to Lametti via a social media post and revealing that he had discussed his departure with Carney earlier in the summer.

Carney also announced the appointment of Vera Alexander as Canada’s next ambassador to Germany, replacing the late John Horgan. Alexander, a seasoned civil servant, will assume the diplomatic role following Horgan’s passing last year.
