Madeline Buss, residing in Vancouver, recounts her emotional journey of independence when faced with her mother’s critical health situation. Her mother’s complex medical history, including battles with multiple sclerosis, bone cancer, and mental health issues, added to the weight of the situation.

Receiving the news of her mother needing a heart transplant while finalizing her apartment lease left Madeline shaken. She found herself questioning her decision to move away and lamenting not being by her mother’s side in Cambridge, Ontario. Having shouldered caregiver responsibilities from a young age due to her mother’s health challenges, Madeline struggled with the idea of pursuing her own goals independent of her mother’s care needs.

She realized the importance of allowing others to care for her in return and embraced the unconventional yet supportive dynamics of her relationships. Despite the lingering guilt of not always being physically present for her mother, Madeline found solace in adapting to a new chapter of life where she could navigate challenges with resilience and self-determination.
