Share

Ottawa has criticized Israel’s recent ground offensive in Gaza City, describing it as “horrific” and expressing concerns that it could impede the release of hostages still held by Hamas. Israel has intensified its airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, aiming to prevent further attacks by Hamas in what was once the most densely populated city in the region.

The international community has strongly condemned the escalation, highlighting the dire situation in Gaza, including food shortages and Israel’s efforts to move civilians towards the Egyptian border as part of a military operation. Global Affairs Canada emphasized the need for Israel to comply with international law, calling for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian assistance, and the release of all hostages.

Responding to the criticism, Israeli Ambassador to Canada Iddo Moed defended his country’s actions, stating that Israel is fulfilling its obligations under international conventions and highlighting the harsh conditions faced by Israeli hostages in Gaza. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed plans to recognize Palestinian statehood, with conditions such as reforms and upcoming general elections in the West Bank excluding Hamas participation.

The UN Human Rights Council’s expert panel recently concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, a claim rejected by Israel. Justice Minister Sean Fraser stressed the importance of a thorough legal process to determine the validity of such allegations. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand convened Arab ambassadors to discuss efforts towards a Gaza ceasefire and humanitarian aid resumption.

Calls for stronger measures against Israel have been made by activists, with the International Association of Genocide Scholars asserting that Israel’s actions align with the UN’s definition of genocide. Bloc Québécois foreign affairs critic Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe urged Ottawa to impose sanctions on Israel, echoing the European Union’s tariff plans on Israeli goods. Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin highlighted the need for constructive dialogue and peace initiatives amidst growing political divisions over the conflict.
