Taylor Swift’s latest album, titled “The Life of a Showgirl,” has achieved a remarkable milestone by selling four million equivalent album units in the United States during its debut week. This achievement marks the largest first-week sales in modern music history, as reported by Luminate, a prominent industry data and analytics firm that has been tracking sales since 1991.
The accomplishment surpasses the previous record set by Adele’s album “25,” which sold 3.378 million copies in its first week back in 2015. Released on October 3, “The Life of a Showgirl” garnered a total of 3,479,500 pure album sales in its opening week.
With this feat, Taylor Swift has secured her status as the solo artist with the most No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, boasting a total of 15 chart-topping albums. She has now surpassed artists like Drake and Jay-Z, each with 14 No. 1 albums, and is only behind The Beatles, who hold the record with 19 No. 1 albums.
Taylor Swift’s album broke records right from the beginning, with an impressive first-day sales figure of 2.7 million copies in traditional album sales. Her previous album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” released in 2024, amassed 2.61 million equivalent album units in its first week in the U.S.
One contributing factor to Swift’s success is the release of her album in various vinyl variants, including exclusive editions available at Target such as “It’s Frightening,” “It’s Rapturous,” and “It’s Beautiful,” along with an exclusive vinyl release titled “The Crowd Is Your King.” Additionally, other vinyl variants like “The Tiny Bubble in Champagne Collection,” “The Baby That’s Show Business Collection,” and “The Shiny Bug Collection,” as well as standard LP and cassette versions in unique colors, were made available.
Moreover, “The Life of a Showgirl” set a new record for the most copies of a vinyl album sold in a single week in the U.S., with 1.2 million copies sold on its debut day. This surpassed the previous record held by “The Tortured Poets Department,” which sold 859,000 copies of its vinyl version in the first week.
On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, every song from “The Life of a Showgirl” made a debut, securing the top 12 spots on the chart dated October 18. Notably, “The Fate of Ophelia” became her 13th No. 1 hit on the chart. This achievement marks the third instance in her career where Swift has occupied the entire top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, a first for any artist. She previously achieved this feat with her albums “Midnights” in 2022 and “The Tortured Poets Department” in 2024.
Additionally, Taylor Swift’s record-breaking success coincides with the announcement of two new projects on Disney+. One project is a six-episode docuseries titled “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour: The End of an Era,” offering a behind-the-scenes look at her landmark Eras Tour. The first two episodes of the series are set to premiere on December 12.
Furthermore, Swift is set to release a concert film titled “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour: The Final Show,” featuring elements from her album “The Tortured Poets Department” integrated into her performance. The film captures her three-and-a-half-hour live show in Vancouver, distinguishing it from her 2023 concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which was filmed during shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
