Liberal Leader John Hogan faced defensive remarks on Friday as Trades N.L., the province’s major trades organization, endorsed the Progressive Conservative Party, despite Hogan’s efforts to shift support in various districts. Hogan expressed the Liberals’ dedication to collaborating with Trades N.L. to advocate for trades workers and safeguard jobs in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Trades N.L., representing over 14,000 trades workers in the region, announced its endorsement of PC Leader Tony Wakeham as the next premier. Executive director Bob Fiander highlighted the PC Party’s proactive approach in contrast to the perceived lack of action from the Liberal government.

Hogan emphasized his commitment to creating job opportunities, particularly referencing the Churchill Falls MOU, a significant part of the province’s job creation strategy, which Wakeham has not fully supported. Hogan reiterated his pledge to job creation initiatives, including projects in Labrador West and throughout the region.

During a three-day tour targeting blue districts, Hogan and the Liberals made a concentrated effort to sway traditionally PC-held areas. In Fogo Island-Cape Freels, former Mountie Dale Lewis aimed to reclaim the district for the Liberals, emphasizing issues like healthcare and the fishery in his campaign.

Hogan also visited Paradise, where he pledged to construct a multimillion-dollar interchange on the Trans-Canada Highway if re-elected. Liberal candidates like Dan Bobbett and Cheryl O’Brien are contesting in districts historically dominated by the PC Party.

Ferryland, a long-standing PC stronghold, has seen continuous Progressive Conservative representation since 1971. Despite the challenge, Liberal hopeful Cheryl O’Brien remains optimistic about her chances, vowing to be a strong advocate for the district’s residents.
