Toronto Swimmer Josh Liendo Shatters World Record

Share

Josh Liendo made a remarkable splash at the Pan Am Sports Centre, his hometown pool, setting a short course world record in the men’s 100 butterfly. Liendo, a Toronto swimmer, achieved a winning time of 47.68 seconds, surpassing Switzerland’s Noe Ponti’s previous record of 47.71. Liendo, who also clinched a gold medal in the men’s 50 freestyle, expressed his disbelief at setting a world record during the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup event.

The two-time Olympian received $12,500 in total, with $10,000 awarded for breaking the world record. Liendo’s family and former chiropractor were among the spectators cheering him on during his historic performance. Byron MacDonald, head coach at the University of Toronto and CBC Sports swimming analyst, praised Liendo’s impeccable technique and noted that the world record was inevitable for the talented athlete.

In another impressive feat, Liendo set a World Cup record in the men’s 50 freestyle with a time of 20.31, outpacing American Jack Alexy. Liendo’s previous rival, Ilya Kharun from Montreal, secured the bronze in the 50 free event. Liendo’s achievements add to his growing list of accolades, including being the first Black Canadian swimmer to win an Olympic medal in Paris last year.

The competition will continue through Saturday, with live streaming available on CBC Sports and CBC Gem. The event also saw other notable victories, including Hungary’s Hubert Kos setting a world record in the men’s 200 backstroke. Canadian star Summer McIntosh was absent due to illness, while various international swimmers clinched victories and cash prizes.
