“CFIA Issues Recall for Barrhaven Market’s Organic Pistachios”

Share

Pistachios distributed by an independent grocer in Barrhaven have been recalled over potential salmonella contamination, as announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on Sunday. The affected product, organic pistachio kernels, was sold at Barrhaven Market situated at 2910 Woodroffe Ave, located in a strip mall near Longfields Drive. The recall pertains to pistachios sold on or before October 5, with identifying codes commencing with 0 200223 and varying in quantities.

The recall was initiated based on test findings, with CFIA indicating no reported illnesses linked to the consumption of the affected pistachios. This recall in Ottawa marks the most recent instance of suspected salmonella contamination linked to pistachio items, with over 100 Canadians falling ill and more than a dozen requiring hospitalization since July.

CFIA encourages individuals who suspect illness from consuming the pistachios to seek medical advice. Recalled products should be discarded or returned to the store, as advised by the agency. CFIA warns that food contaminated with Salmonella may not exhibit visual or olfactory signs of spoilage but can still pose health risks, particularly to children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms from Salmonella exposure may include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea for healthy individuals, while severe arthritis could develop as a long-term complication. CFIA mentions the possibility of additional recalls pending their investigation, with inspectors ensuring the removal of affected products from store shelves.
