London’s Old East Village (OEV) is unveiling a vibrant three-piece art installation at key locations in the neighborhood. Dubbed “You Are Here,” the project features two mosaic pillars at the intersection of Dundas and Adelaide streets and a mosaic planter at the corner of Dundas and Elizabeth streets.
Cassandra Robinson, a mosaic technician from Clayworx involved in the project, emphasized the importance of fostering care for public spaces in the city. She noted that the artwork not only adds brightness to the area but also signifies a commitment to the community.
The pillars, adorned with a spectrum of colors and unique tiles, narrate the history and present-day essence of OEV. One of the pillars incorporates historical references, such as potatoes symbolizing the area’s former potato fields. The opposite pillar showcases contemporary establishments like Mystic Wisdom Tea and Bookshop and Aeolian Hall, represented by a teapot and music notes, respectively.
Community involvement was a significant aspect of the project, with local residents creating human-shaped tiles that adorn both pillars. Jen Pastorius, the executive director at Clayworx, highlighted the personal connections individuals have with the artwork, making it more special and meaningful.
” You Are Here” is a collaborative effort between Clayworx and the City of London, aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Old East Village through mosaic art. The practical aspect of the installation includes streetscape maps on the pillars, providing guidance through Dundas Street and its adjacent side streets.
The planter at the opposite end of OEV complements the pillars, featuring tiles shaped like iconic buildings in the area, such as the Palace Theatre and Dough EV. Mosaic artist Beth Turnbull, alongside Robinson and mosaic assistant Miaka Fredin, meticulously researched OEV’s history to design the pieces.
Overall, the project seeks to brighten people’s day and instill a sense of appreciation for the community’s surroundings. The artwork not only adds beauty to the neighborhood but also aims to uplift spirits and create a more cheerful environment for residents and visitors alike.
