Lionsgate unveiled a preview of the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” on Monday, shedding light on some aspects of one of the most highly anticipated films of 2026 while leaving many questions unanswered.

First announced in 2022, the film directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring Jaafar Jackson as the lead character traces Michael Jackson’s journey from obscurity to global fame. Initially set for an April 2025 release, the premiere was delayed twice due to reshoots. Reports suggest that the delays were linked to a segment focusing on sexual abuse allegations against Jackson, which had to be altered significantly because of a legal agreement between the musician’s estate and Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of misconduct in 1993.

Chandler received a substantial settlement of around $20 million, but the estate apparently failed to disclose the legal constraints on depicting him or his family to the film’s producers. The veracity of rumors regarding changes to the movie’s conclusion or its inclusion of Jackson’s legal battles remains uncertain.

The possibility of a sequel to the film is also shrouded in mystery, with speculations suggesting a two-part structure, with the first part highlighting Jackson’s rise to stardom and the second exploring his peak fame and subsequent tarnished reputation. The film’s reshoots were reportedly aimed at splitting the original concept into two distinct parts, primarily due to legal issues.

While details about the involvement of Jackson’s family in the production remain unclear, actor Colman Domingo, portraying Joe Jackson in the film, indicated that Michael’s children, Paris and Prince Jackson, were supportive of the project. However, Paris Jackson later refuted this claim on Instagram, stating her lack of involvement in the movie’s production and highlighting her concerns about inaccuracies in the script.

The influence of estates in shaping the narrative of music biopics, as seen in the case of Michael Jackson’s estate, underscores the complexities of portraying iconic figures in the entertainment industry. Legal battles and control over representation have been common themes in the industry, with estates often dictating the portrayal of their deceased artists in various media forms.

Despite the challenges faced during the production of “Michael,” the film’s potential success hinges on the enduring popularity of Michael Jackson himself. Industry projections suggest that the biopic could be a breakout hit in 2026, possibly crossing the billion-dollar mark at the box office, driven by the allure of Jackson’s name and legacy. The genre of music biopics continues to evolve, with varying degrees of critical and commercial success, emphasizing the enduring appeal of iconic musicians in cinematic portrayals.
