“Winter Storm Causes Tree Damage and Travel Disruptions in Manitoba”

Share

Parts of Manitoba are currently experiencing winter conditions, leading to significant tree damage. Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning early Monday morning, forecasting over 30 centimeters of snow in northern Manitoba. The most affected areas are expected to be from Flin Flon through Thompson, with general snowfall amounts of 10-25 cm in other warned regions. Wabowden and Pukatawagan are expected to receive over 20 cm of snow, while Lynn Lake may see 5-10 cm.

Residents are facing challenges due to heavy, wet snow, with reports of downed trees and branches in various areas. Northerly winds reaching 50-60 km/h are causing poor visibility from blowing snow, leading to highway closures and travel warnings in affected regions.

Highway closures have been implemented on roads like Highway 391 and Highway 280 due to poor driving conditions caused by the storm. Meteorologist Dan Fulton explained that the storm, originating from Montana and tracking along the Manitoba–Saskatchewan border, transitioned into heavy snowfall in northern Manitoba.

Local businesses and residents are dealing with the aftermath of the storm, such as Elissa Bogdan of Wekusko Falls Lodge, who mentioned the need for extensive tree removal to reopen roads. Power outages have affected thousands of Manitoba Hydro customers in various regions, with crews working to restore services amidst challenging conditions.

Despite the disruptions, some residents like Elissa Bogdan are grateful for the much-needed moisture brought by the snow, following a dry summer and intense fire season. The community is coming together to manage the challenges posed by the winter storm, emphasizing the importance of safety and preparedness during this time.
