Share

Plans are underway to replace the century-old swing bridge providing the sole land access to Manitoulin Island with a new two-lane bridge featuring a pedestrian walkway and bike lane. Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed that Stantec Consulting Ltd. has secured the contract for the detailed design of the new bridge.

Emphasizing the urgency of the project, Ford mentioned that preliminary work is already in progress and major construction is scheduled to commence in the spring. The provincial government is committing $9 million to the initiative, although the final cost remains undisclosed.

Describing the existing Little Current Swing Bridge as a vital connection for families, workers, and businesses for more than a century, Ford expressed confidence that the new and expanded bridge will enhance economic growth on Manitoulin Island and ensure reliable access to the highway network for years to come.

The province’s investment in the new two-lane bridge aligns with its larger initiative to allocate $30 billion towards enhancing transportation infrastructure within Ontario.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria highlighted the government’s commitment to bolstering critical infrastructure to support the region’s growth and ensure the safety and reliability of local residents and businesses.

Furthermore, the provincial government announced funding for the development of two long-term care facilities on Manitoulin Island. St. Joseph’s Lodge in Gore Bay is set to receive 64 new beds across two resident home areas by 2027. The Wikwemikong Nursing Home will undergo construction to accommodate 96 beds for Indigenous residents, with the project slated to begin next year.
