Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev was hospitalized following an on-ice incident in Saturday night’s 5-2 triumph against the Philadelphia Flyers, as confirmed by head coach Craig Berube. Tanev was involved in a collision with Philadelphia forward Matvei Michkov during the game’s final 11:37. Although the impact was shoulder-to-shoulder, Tanev’s head jolted back upon contact, leaving him prone on the ice.
Medical staff promptly attended to Tanev, securing his head and neck before transferring him onto a stretcher for removal from the rink. This unfortunate event occurred during Tanev’s return to play following a four-game absence due to a concussion. Michkov received a minor penalty for interference during the play.
Post-game, Berube mentioned that Tanev was transported to a hospital in Philadelphia for evaluations and displayed movement in all limbs. There was a possibility that Tanev might travel back to Toronto with the team.
Berube expressed, “He’s showing signs of movement, and we are optimistic about his condition. Further tests are underway, and we hope for positive outcomes. There’s a chance he may accompany us back home.”
Tanev contributed with an assist on Jake McCabe’s goal in the second period. Teammate Auston Matthews, who also scored in the game, emphasized the team’s concern for Tanev’s well-being, stating, “It’s a difficult situation because he’s a crucial part of our team. Whenever a stretcher is brought out, it’s a heavy moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, and we are all rooting for his recovery.”
