“Brad Spence Receives Respect Award for Empowering Indigenous Job Seekers”

Brad Spence recalls a heartwarming moment at the BHP Jansen Discovery Lodge in Saskatchewan, where a young woman approached him with gratitude for helping her secure a job. As the director of training and employment at George Gordon Developments Limited, Spence has assisted numerous individuals in finding employment opportunities. His dedication to this work was recognized with a Respect award at the inaugural Saskatchewan Okimaw awards ceremony in Regina on September 12, 2025, honoring Indigenous male leaders.

The woman who approached Spence at the mine site tearfully thanked him for enabling her to obtain a job that allowed her to purchase a car and travel with her children. Despite his extensive background in working with bands like Rush and the Backstreet Boys worldwide, Spence emphasized that the woman’s success was due to her own initiative and not solely his intervention.

The Okimaw awards, originating in Alberta, were brought to Saskatchewan by Chelsa Racette, who described “Okimaw” as a Plains Cree term meaning chief or leader. Racette commended Spence for his inclusive treatment of others, stating that he uplifts the community and demonstrates gratitude for life, making him a deserving recipient of the respect award.

Initially skeptical about winning the award after being nominated, Spence expressed humility when reflecting on the accomplishments of other nominees with impressive academic and professional backgrounds. His journey from the music industry to studying psychology and Indian studies culminated in his current role of assisting individuals, including those facing barriers like lack of identification or skills, in securing employment opportunities.

Spence emphasized the importance of leading with integrity and responsibility, highlighting that leadership extends beyond conventional work hours to address challenges and support others whenever needed. He views his role as a guide, encouraging individuals to embrace growth and strive for personal development while setting a positive example for younger generations.
