Edmontonian Experts Emphasize Climate Action for Municipal Election

Share

Municipal governments face growing challenges in addressing climate change, a topic of significant importance to Edmontonians leading up to the upcoming municipal election. Climate mitigation and adaptation, key concepts in a changing world, were discussed with Neal LaMontagne and Sandeep Agrawal from the University of Alberta.

Mitigation involves reducing impact by decreasing energy intensity through transportation and construction practices, while adaptation focuses on managing climate-related stresses. Transportation and building infrastructure are crucial areas for cities to tackle climate change, with a focus on reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency.

City councils play a vital role in promoting sustainable practices such as shorter commutes, active mobility, and efficient goods distribution. Additionally, public buildings are increasingly serving multiple functions, requiring innovative solutions for climate resilience.

Agrawal emphasized that climate change is a present reality, impacting not just infrastructure but also the well-being of residents. Edmonton’s zoning and density goals are steps in the right direction, addressing the effects of rising temperatures and declining air quality.

While Edmonton’s climate policies are relatively strong, there is room for improvement, particularly in making buildings more energy-efficient and EV-friendly. Municipalities have the potential to lead in sustainable development, but constraints like provincial regulations and private sector influence pose challenges.

The experts highlighted the need for cities to prioritize ecological design and sustainable development to create more livable environments. Election day is set for Oct. 20, emphasizing the importance of considering climate action in municipal decision-making.
