“UN Urges Israel: Open All Gaza Crossings for Aid Surge”

The United Nations humanitarian relief chief is calling on Israel to open all entry points into Gaza to facilitate a significant increase in aid delivery. Tom Fletcher, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, emphasized the urgent need for a surge in humanitarian assistance during his visit to the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

Fletcher expressed his emotional reaction to witnessing the accumulation of supplies waiting to be transported into Gaza. He stressed the necessity of escalating aid operations to include thousands of trucks per week carrying essential items like food and medicine into the region.

While acknowledging that some aid shipments have been entering Gaza through Israeli crossings at Kerem Shalom and Kissufim, Fletcher emphasized the importance of opening all crossings, including Rafah, to ensure that civilians receive the necessary support without delay. He underlined that humanitarian aid should not be used as a bargaining tool, citing international rules and laws.

Although Israel has indicated its intention to open the Rafah crossing for the movement of people, the Israeli government clarified that humanitarian aid would not be permitted through this entry point. This decision follows ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas, stemming from a violent conflict initiated by a Hamas attack on Israel in 2023.

Despite the challenges and mistrust between the parties, Fletcher expressed optimism about potential progress and hoped for positive developments regarding the Rafah Crossing in the near future. Joining him on the visit to Rafah, Samer Abdeljaber, regional director for the World Food Program in Cairo, emphasized the importance of further opening crossings to facilitate access and ensure safety for all in Gaza.

Recent aid deliveries to Gaza have been welcomed, but the demand for increased assistance remains high, especially in the face of limited medical care and widespread homelessness among the population. The destruction caused by past conflicts has left much of Gaza in ruins, with significant casualties and infrastructure damage.

Local groups in Gaza have expressed appreciation for the aid received so far but emphasize the need to expedite operations to meet the ongoing needs of vulnerable populations, particularly children. Highlighting the critical role of humanitarian supplies in alleviating suffering, advocates stress the importance of opening all land crossings into Gaza to ensure efficient delivery of aid.

Rebuilding and reconstructing Gaza following years of conflict will be a long and arduous process, given the extensive damage to essential infrastructure. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, aiming to provide sustained support to the people of Gaza during the recovery and rebuilding phase.
