Dennis Trudeau, a well-known and beloved figure in Montreal’s radio and television scene, as well as a significant presence on the national broadcasting stage, has passed away at the age of 77. Trudeau, a former reporter, radio host, and news anchor at the CBC, was remembered by Julian Sher, a former senior producer at The Fifth Estate and a close colleague, for his deep appreciation and understanding of Montreal’s English and French cultures.
Sher highlighted Trudeau’s unique insight into the city during times of turmoil, drawing on his profound knowledge of Quebec and Montreal’s history. Trudeau’s academic background in political science and philosophy from the University of Ottawa, coupled with a journalism diploma from Western University, laid the foundation for his successful career in media.
His tenure at CBC, which began in 1979, included hosting roles on programs such as Daybreak, As It Happens, and Cross-Country Checkup. Sher fondly recalled their early mornings preparing for the radio show, emphasizing Trudeau’s insatiable curiosity and dedication to in-depth reporting.
After his time at CBC, Trudeau briefly hosted a morning show at Corus Entertainment and later founded Dennis Trudeau Communications Inc., offering various communication services. Additionally, he contributed to Magazine Montréal centre-ville and provided world affairs commentary on the radio show Dutrizac l’après-midi.
Trudeau’s commitment to press freedom was evident through his volunteer work with Reporters Without Borders, where he served as vice-president of the Canadian section and actively advocated for journalistic liberties. Sher summarized Trudeau’s legacy as embodying the finest qualities of both the CBC and Montreal.
Colleagues like Lynne Robson, a former CBC reporter, praised Trudeau’s mentorship and kindness, recalling how he encouraged and supported her early career in television news. Anna Asimakopulos, a retired CBC reporter, emphasized Trudeau’s captivating presence and noted his enduring charm, wit, and thoughtfulness.
Trudeau’s passing marks the loss of a media icon who left a lasting impact on the broadcasting industry and the community he served.
