Geneviève Gros-Louis’s original composition “Thunder Medicine” fills a Quebec City event space with its captivating sound during a pre-performance check. The talented violinist and composer, hailing from the Huron-Wendat Nation of Wendake, immerses herself in her music, finding inspiration and connection to her roots and ancestors.

After a decade of professional orchestral performances post her violin studies at McGill University, Gros-Louis delved into composing following show cancellations due to the pandemic. Her creative journey has since garnered global recognition, from showcasing at Paris Fashion Week to creating music for National Geographic and gracing the Cannes Film Festival with an original score for Martin Scorsese’s film “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Drawing from her heritage, Gros-Louis integrates elements of traditional social songs from her upbringing into her upcoming projects. She aims to modernize these songs, collaborating with community members on a forthcoming album set to launch within six months, with a vision of making traditional music more accessible and enjoyable for future generations.

Prior to infusing Wendat social songs with a contemporary twist, Gros-Louis received teachings from a Wendake elder, enriching her cultural expression and musical depth. Her dedication to fusing Indigenous heritage into her work has opened new avenues for self-expression and creativity.

Artistic director Richard Aubé, who selected Gros-Louis for a recent event in Quebec City, applauds her innovative approach to music-making, emphasizing the uniqueness and depth in her compositions. Gros-Louis reflects on her journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunities to showcase her culture on prestigious stages, marking a profound “full circle moment.”

The violinist’s upcoming recording at Abbey Road Studios in London, in collaboration with the Audio Network, signifies a significant milestone in her career, evoking emotional anticipation and gratitude for her musical evolution. From crafting a makeshift violin as a child to performing on international stages, Gros-Louis’s musical odyssey showcases her unwavering passion and dedication to her craft.

Josée Gros-Louis, Geneviève’s mother, recounts her daughter’s musical beginnings, from fashioning a tissue box violin to pursuing a professional music career.
