A man aged 32 lost his life in a solo car accident on Monday morning in western Prince Edward Island. Emergency responders rushed to the location on Route 132 in Northam, approximately 30 kilometers west of Summerside, after receiving a cellphone crash detection alert just before 7 a.m., according to a statement by P.E.I. RCMP.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle veered across the center line and landed in a ditch on the opposite side of the road. The man from Prince County, who was the only person in the car, received initial treatment from Island EMS and Tyne Valley Fire Department personnel at the scene. He was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by the authorities.
Authorities have stated that they have no reason to believe that impairment played a role in the accident. The provincial coroner’s office, in conjunction with the police, is conducting an inquiry into the incident.
The use of cellphone crash detection involves utilizing the phone’s motion sensors, microphone, and GPS information to detect specific patterns associated with severe car crashes. In the event of a crash detection, the phone emits an alarm and presents a 10-second alert. If the alarm is not canceled by the user, an automatic emergency call is made, transmitting audio details to emergency services, including the vehicle’s coordinates.
