UPDATE Oct. 14, 2025: Both hikers have been reported to be in stable condition following an incident where they were attacked by a grizzly bear while hiking in a popular area of the McGregor Mountain range near Prince George, B.C. Emergency responders, including a critical care helicopter, arrived at the scene on Sunday around 3 p.m. PT. The injured hikers were then airlifted to Prince George Airport and subsequently transferred to the hospital via ground ambulance.
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) confirmed the attack and closed off the trails in the vicinity for investigation. Eamon McArthur from the BCCOS advised hikers to steer clear of the Pass Lake area as a precaution. He emphasized the importance of hiking in groups, making noise, and carrying safety equipment like bear spray, noisemakers, and communication devices to ensure preparedness in such remote environments.
While the exact circumstances of the incident are still under review, McArthur mentioned that the hikers were equipped with safety gear. According to WildSafeBC, grizzly bear encounters are rare in British Columbia, with less than one fatal attack occurring in the province every five years.
