“Empowerment Program Tackles Youth Unemployment Challenges”

Abiola Yussuph has experienced firsthand the challenges of youth unemployment currently affecting many individuals. He recently attended a career resource fair organized by The Come Up, an empowerment program for Black youth under the Africa Centre. Rather than seeking immediate job opportunities, Abiola was focused on exploring potential career paths. As a Grade 11 student at Father Michael McCaffery Catholic High School in Edmonton, he highlighted the increasing difficulty of finding employment in the city.

According to Justinah Adeyanju, the program co-ordinator at The Come Up, the event aimed to expose participants to various career options to raise awareness among the upcoming workforce. The latest data from Statistics Canada revealed a decline in the youth unemployment rate in Alberta from 17% in August to 14.7% in September, dropping from a peak of 20.3% in July. In comparison, the national figure has been hovering around 14% since April.

A report commissioned by King’s Trust Canada identified significant challenges faced by young individuals entering the workforce, such as heightened competition, limited job opportunities, and inadequate on-the-job training. The report emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between governments, educational institutions, and businesses to implement effective policies and initiatives to address these issues.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed concerns about the persistently high youth unemployment rates and highlighted the government’s $8 million Alberta Youth Employment Incentive Program, introduced in September to subsidize the hourly wages of young employees. The initiative aims to assist 1,000 businesses in hiring 2,500 youths across the province. Smith emphasized the importance of investing in the younger generation to build a strong economic foundation for the future.

University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe explained that economic uncertainties, trade disruptions, and reduced job vacancies in various sectors have contributed to the challenges faced by young job seekers. Tombe emphasized the need for accelerated economic growth to create more job opportunities and reduce unemployment rates effectively.

Overall, addressing youth unemployment requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond simply encouraging employers to hire more young individuals. Sustainable solutions lie in fostering economic growth to spur job creation and improve employment prospects for the next generation.
