Residents of Arviat, Nunavut, have been cautioned to stay alert for indications of rabies following the discovery of a fox exhibiting unusual behavior. Nunavut’s Health department disclosed in a press release on Tuesday that the fox came into contact with dogs, although no interactions with humans were reported. The fox was euthanized and sent for testing as a precautionary measure due to the potential risk of rabies exposure.
To mitigate the risk of rabies transmission, the department is urging all community members to remain vigilant for fox sightings in the vicinity. Individuals who have encountered a fox or a dog bite are advised to promptly visit the local health center and report the incident. Timely initiation of treatment is crucial as rabies infections are typically fatal, according to the department.
Furthermore, the department emphasized the importance of monitoring domestic animals, particularly those tethered outdoors, for rabies symptoms. These signs include excessive drooling, unusual vocalizations, unsteady gait, or other erratic behavior. In the event of a dog being bitten or attacked by a fox, individuals are instructed to contact the environmental health officer at 867-983-5241 or the conservation officer at 867-857-2976.
