“White House Begins Demolition for Trump’s $250M Ballroom”

Share

The White House commenced the demolition of a section of the East Wing on Monday to make way for a new $250 million ballroom for President Donald Trump. Despite lacking approval from the federal agency overseeing such projects, construction equipment was seen tearing into the East Wing facade and windows, with building parts strewn on the ground.

President Trump announced the construction kick-off through social media and mentioned the ongoing work while hosting college baseball champions from Louisiana State University in the East Room. The construction project is progressing even without approval from the National Capital Planning Commission, which has jurisdiction over construction and major renovations in the Washington area.

It remains uncertain if the White House has submitted the ballroom plans for the agency’s review. Democratic congress member Suzan DelBene criticized the renovation, stating that it reflects Trump’s self-centered focus. The East Wing, originally built in 1902 and renovated over the years, houses various offices, including those of the first lady.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that the East Wing offices would be relocated temporarily during construction, emphasizing that no structures would be demolished during the process. President Trump defends the addition of the ballroom, citing the need for a larger space to host dignitaries and guests.

The project, expected to be completed before Trump’s term ends in 2029, has garnered support from various companies and individuals contributing to the construction costs. Carrier Global Corp. confirmed their donation of an energy-efficient HVAC system for the ballroom. The construction work, including site preparation and tree clearing, began in September to meet the project’s timeline.

Despite ongoing controversies and critiques, the White House remains steadfast in its plans to introduce the new ballroom, which would mark a significant structural change to the Executive Mansion.
