The City of Hamilton urges residents to safeguard themselves against respiratory illnesses during the upcoming flu season. With colder weather driving more people indoors, an increase in respiratory illness cases is anticipated, prompting the city to advocate for a comprehensive prevention approach.
Key preventive measures recommended by the city include receiving vaccinations for influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), staying home when feeling unwell to prevent disease spread, maintaining good hand hygiene, coughing or sneezing etiquette, wearing well-fitted masks in public indoor settings, regularly sanitizing frequently touched surfaces, and avoiding crowded spaces.
Starting October 27, influenza and COVID-19 vaccines will be accessible to all Hamilton residents at participating pharmacies and healthcare facilities. Individuals at higher risk, such as those over 65, residents and staff of long-term care facilities, and hospitalized patients, already have access to these vaccines. Pharmacies offering vaccines can be found on the Province of Ontario’s website.
Additionally, RSV vaccines are available for individuals over 75 and those over 60 at high risk. While most individuals recover from RSV without medical intervention, severe infections can occur, especially in babies, young children, and older adults. Pregnant individuals in their third trimester, infants under eight months, and high-risk children under 24 months can also receive the RSV vaccine. Eligibility information is provided on the city’s website for those interested.
