“Swift Current Broncos Head Coach Resigns Amid WHL Conduct Probe”

Share

The head coach of the Swift Current Broncos has stepped down following an inquiry by the Western Hockey League that revealed violations of the league’s conduct standards. Dean DeSilva resigned from his role as head coach after the WHL imposed a five-game suspension on him and fined the team $10,000.

The league stated that DeSilva breached its conduct standards during two on-ice incidents while dealing with player discipline. WHL commissioner Dan Near emphasized the importance of accountability within the league’s culture, asserting that all members must adhere to clear and consistent conduct standards. Near highlighted the league’s commitment to upholding integrity and safeguarding the well-being of everyone involved in the sport.

DeSilva served his suspension from November 5 to November 11 but announced his resignation on November 14. Broncos general manager Chad Leslie expressed that after careful deliberation, it was mutually agreed that DeSilva’s departure was in the best interest of both parties and the organization. Leslie reiterated the team’s dedication to creating a positive environment for all players.

This development comes after the Swift Current Broncos and former head coach Devan Praught parted ways two years ago due to Praught’s suspension for alleged violations of the WHL conduct standards.

In a related announcement, the WHL disclosed the suspension of Peter Anholt, the general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, along with a $10,000 fine for the team. Anholt was found to have breached the league’s conduct standards by using intimidating behavior and language in a post-game address to players following a loss to Edmonton in October. Anholt will resume his duties on November 26 and acknowledged that his conduct did not meet expectations, committing to a higher standard going forward.

Both investigations were initiated following tips received through the WHL Respect Line, a confidential 1-800 tip line established by the league.
