Ski jumpers are accustomed to facing both triumphs and setbacks in their sport, and Abi Strate from Canada had a mix of both during her summer season. The 24-year-old athlete from Calgary excelled on the 2025 Summer Grand Prix circuit, achieving five podium finishes, including a victory at the venue for the upcoming Milano-Cortina Olympic Winter Games.
However, her joy was tempered by the unfortunate injury of her friend and teammate, Alex Loutitt, during a test event in Predazzo, Italy. Strate described the moment as shocking and heartbreaking, especially considering the timing right before the Games. Strate and Loutitt were part of Canada’s bronze-winning mixed team event at the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022 and had been supporting each other through their successes leading up to the upcoming Winter Games.
With Loutitt sidelined due to knee surgery, Strate now feels added pressure as she aims for more medals this season. Despite the challenges ahead, she is determined to approach the competitions with motivation and excitement, focusing on her performance rather than feeling burdened by expectations.
Team coach Janko Zwitter praised the camaraderie and support between Strate and Loutitt, emphasizing the impact of Loutitt’s absence on the team dynamics. Strate acknowledged the adjustment she will have to make without her teammate’s presence at the top of the hill, highlighting the importance of their mutual support and encouragement.
As Strate prepares for the upcoming season, she is focused on her jumping performance rather than specific results. By setting goals centered around her jumping technique and personal improvement, she aims to maintain a positive mindset and continue her success on the slopes. Zwitter believes that by focusing on her best performance rather than chasing podium finishes, Strate is poised for a successful season ahead.
Ultimately, Strate’s definition of success lies in giving her best effort on each jump, aiming for strong and satisfying performances that will lead to podium placements and personal pride. She is determined to leave everything on the table and approach the Olympics with a sense of accomplishment, regardless of the outcome.
