As Canadians unite to celebrate the filmmakers and narratives of Canadian cinema, special events are planned to pay tribute to the life and impact of Graham Greene, a respected actor from Six Nations. Greene, a member of the Oneida community from Six Nations of the Grand River in southern Ontario, passed away at the age of 73 last autumn.

National Canadian Film Day on April 15, a nationwide celebration of Canadian cinema co-sponsored by CBC, will showcase Canadian films through screenings across various communities. As part of the commemorations for this year, screenings will be organized to honor Greene’s contributions, including a presentation of his 1991 film “Clearcut” at The Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford, Ont.

The screening, scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. on April 15, will be open to the public, with members of Greene’s family and the Six Nations community in attendance. Additionally, the event will feature the screening of the short documentary “Graham Greene: I’m Just Me” directed by Tara Johns.

Screenings of “Clearcut” and Greene’s acclaimed film “Seeds” will also take place in Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax, N.S., showcasing the diverse talents of Greene who portrayed numerous characters on stage and screen over a career spanning almost five decades, ranging from prominent movies to various television productions.

Throughout his illustrious career, Greene received accolades such as being appointed to the Order of Canada, an Academy Award nomination for his role in “Dances with Wolves,” the Earle Grey lifetime achievement award for television acting in 2004, and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2025.

The commemorative events serve as a poignant reminder of Greene’s lasting influence on Canadian cinema and his enduring legacy within the entertainment industry.
