“Carney Eyes Meeting with Chinese President at APEC Summit”

Ottawa is anticipating a potential meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping during an upcoming summit in South Korea, as revealed by a senior official from the Canadian government on Thursday. Carney, emphasizing the importance of reinitiating a wide-ranging dialogue with Beijing following strained relations in recent years, is scheduled to attend an APEC summit in Seoul. He expressed his anticipation of engaging with high-ranking Chinese officials within the next month during a previous statement.

The Canadian government official stated during a briefing that they are hopeful for a meeting between the two leaders and are making arrangements accordingly, with a preference for a possible encounter at the APEC summit. In August, China imposed preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports, a move that came a year after Canada announced a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles. Despite discussions between senior officials from Canada and China regarding the disputes over canola and electric vehicles last Friday, Ottawa has not signaled any immediate resolution to the issues.
