Speed Skater Steven Dubois Overcomes Injury Setback to Shine

Share

Steven Dubois, a renowned short track speed skater known for his exceptional speed, faced a challenging start to the Olympic season due to a leg injury. Despite clinching four world championship titles in the spring, the 28-year-old Canadian athlete from Terrebonne had to halt his training regimen by summer as the injury caused discomfort in his leg.

Dubois described the pain as originating from the adductor muscle, making it challenging to maintain his usual bent skating position. As the Canadian championships approached in late August, his condition worsened, preventing him from participating in the event. An MRI scan later revealed a partial tear in the labrum of his hip, jeopardizing his season, which included the upcoming Milano-Cortina Olympic Games.

The injury marked a significant setback for Dubois, who had never encountered such a serious physical setback in his career. Following a cortisone shot to reduce inflammation, he took a brief hiatus from on-ice training and had to modify his training routine upon returning. Despite the uncertainties and stress surrounding his recovery, Dubois made a successful comeback, earning five medals at the World Tour events in Montreal.

Michael Gilday, a former short track world champion and speed skating analyst, highlighted Dubois’ exceptional acceleration and top speed, emphasizing his potential as a top contender in the upcoming Olympics. Dubois expressed relief and confidence after his strong performances post-injury, attributing his success to overcoming doubts and the support of his team.

Notably, Dubois’ role in the Canadian relay teams has been crucial, leveraging his speed and teamwork to secure victories. His contributions in the relays, particularly the gold medal win at the Beijing Games, hold special significance due to the camaraderie within the Canadian team, which he considers a close-knit family.

Dubois’ return to form and stellar performances post-injury not only reflect his individual prowess but also bolster the Canadian team’s prospects in the upcoming Winter Olympics.
