Canadian figure skaters showcased strong performances in the short programs at the 2025 Finlandia Trophy, positioning themselves well for a chance to win medals in all disciplines. Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier secured the second spot with 79.56 points in the rhythm dance to RuPaul’s “Supermodel [You Better Work],” trailing only Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron of France.
Fournier Beaudry, a Montreal native, previously skated for Canada with Nikolaj Sorensen before his suspension for sexual maltreatment was overturned. Teaming up with Cizeron, the 2022 Olympic champion, this season proved successful as they clinched gold at the Grand Prix de France in October.
In the men’s short program, Stephen Gogolev claimed the second position with 89.35 points, showcasing a clean skate with two quad jumps and a triple axel. This performance placed Gogolev ahead of Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, who finished third after making a few errors. Adam Siao Him Fa led the pack with 92.50 points, while Roman Sadovsky landed in sixth place.
Gogolev and Sadovsky are both vying for Canada’s sole men’s entry at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics, with the final decision to be made after the national championships in January. Meanwhile, Madeline Schizas, a three-time Canadian champion and a top contender for the women’s Olympic spot, secured the third spot in her short program.
In pairs, Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud finished fourth, remaining within striking distance of the podium. The Finlandia Trophy marks the final event in the Grand Prix series and the last opportunity to qualify for the Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, Japan, where the top six skaters in each discipline will compete.
