Grant Avenue Studio, a renowned music recording facility in Hamilton, is commemorating 50 years in the music industry. Established in 1976 by Daniel Lanois, Bob Lanois, and Bob Doidge, the studio occupies a converted Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. It has hosted prominent artists such as Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash.

In 2023, Mike Bruce, Debbie Bruce, and Marco Montano acquired the studio, describing it as a “living museum” brimming with 50 years of musical history. Jamie Tennant, a music enthusiast and program director at CFMU, highlights the studio’s allure, attracting musicians due to its storied past and association with legendary figures like Brian Eno.

The studio’s unique features, including unconventional soundproofing methods like sand-filled window wells, add to its charm. Bruce praises the diverse talent that frequents the studio, from opera singers to indie artists, noting plans to celebrate its legacy through initiatives like the “Grant Avenue Studio Presents” YouTube series.

A standout piece of the studio’s equipment is the vintage MCI JH-500C console, linked to classic rock albums like “Hotel California” and “Back in Black.” Tennant emphasizes the prestige associated with such equipment, enticing bands seeking to replicate iconic sounds. As Grant Avenue Studio marks its 50th anniversary, a lineup of special events, including an anniversary party and a music festival contest, are set to honor its enduring legacy.
