Almost eighteen months into Naheed Nenshi’s leadership of the Alberta NDP and with the next election about two years away, his party has decided to reintroduce him to the people of Alberta this week.

The recently unveiled video showcases Nenshi’s humble beginnings at his family’s laundromat and Red Deer motel, his tenure as Calgary mayor, and his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by everyday Albertans. The video culminates in an inspiring speech where he pledges to lead better than the current premier.

Some may view this as a campaign-style advertisement, but it follows the typical format expected in political promotions. To orchestrate this midterm reintroduction, the NDP enlisted the services of a renowned U.S. political ad agency known for its success in winning elections.

One of the notable achievements of the agency, Fight Agency, is the election of Zohran Mamdani as New York City mayor, as seen in his engaging ads. Similarly, the agency has a track record of success in American progressive politics, despite not clinching victory with the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2016.

The decision to engage Fight Agency was based on their proven ability to resonate with working-class individuals, a strategy deemed essential in reaching out to Albertans by Mike Burton, the NDP’s campaign director.

The new video takes a different approach from the party’s previous campaign in 2023, which heavily criticized Premier Danielle Smith. Instead, it focuses on Nenshi’s personal background, addressing issues of affordability, healthcare, and education in Alberta, while making broad promises for improvement without detailing specific plans.

In addition to partnering with Fight Agency, Nenshi has surrounded himself with a team of former federal Liberals, a departure from the traditional NDP alliance. This unconventional move has raised eyebrows within the party and among critics, especially considering the historical political climate in Alberta.

The NDP’s recent surge in popularity, as indicated by a Leger poll narrowing the gap with the UCP, has bolstered Nenshi’s confidence in his rebranded campaign. With a strong online presence and potential TV ad campaigns in the works, the NDP is gearing up for the upcoming election, aiming to capitalize on the newfound support.

Despite facing skepticism and criticism for his strategic choices, Nenshi remains optimistic about his chances to challenge the UCP in the 2027 election, with a strong team and a fresh campaign approach in place.
