A 21-year-old man passed away on Saturday following an incident involving stab wounds in Alta Vista, as confirmed by the Ottawa Police Service. Paramedics were alerted to the situation at 12:32 a.m., as stated by a representative from the Ottawa Paramedic Service. Upon arriving at the scene on Russell Road in the 1700 block, they discovered the man with potential stab wounds and in cardiac arrest. The individual was rushed to the hospital where his death was later confirmed; he was the sole patient attended to by the paramedics at that location.
The victim was identified by authorities as 21-year-old Raphael Atende in a press release issued on Saturday morning. The release noted that this incident marks the fifteenth homicide recorded in Ottawa this year.
The unfortunate event involving Atende occurred shortly after reports of gunfire on the same street, prompting concerns in the neighborhood. Marty Carr, the councilor for Alta Vista, mentioned receiving feedback from residents regarding the recent surge in violence. She assured that discussions with law enforcement and the community would be scheduled in the coming days to address the situation. Carr emphasized that residents, including parents with young children, have expressed feelings of unease and the desire for a safer environment for outdoor activities.
The Ottawa Police’s homicide unit is currently handling the investigation and has urged anyone with relevant information to reach out at 613-236-1222, extension 5493.
In a separate incident on the same day, emergency services responded to another stabbing in Lowertown around 3 p.m. A woman in her twenties was discovered with multiple injuries near St. Patrick and Cumberland streets. She was promptly taken to a nearby trauma center in serious condition. Although roads in the vicinity were temporarily closed, the police have since reopened them.
