A tragic incident occurred in Oshawa as a trailer fire led to the death of a child and left two adults hospitalized. The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) reported that the fire broke out at a residence on Elgin Street, prompting a response from officers at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday. Acting Staff Sgt. Joanne McCabe of the DRPS described the scene as the trailer being “fully engulfed in flames.”
Tragically, a child was found deceased inside the trailer, while a man and a woman were rushed to the hospital in serious but non-life-threatening condition. McCabe expressed that further details about the child were not available at the time and emphasized the support being offered to the community by victim services and officers.
During the incident, two firefighters sustained minor burns but were promptly treated. Oshawa Fire Chief Stephen Barkwell mentioned that 22 firefighters were deployed to the scene to extinguish the fire and conduct a rescue operation in the trailer. Describing the event as traumatic for the crews and the community, Barkwell highlighted that an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
In response to the incident, DRPS announced the closure of Elgin Street West between Nipigon Street and Park Road North for the ongoing investigative procedures.
