“Renaming of Halifax Street Sparks Community Debate”

Share

A city initiative to rename a street in Halifax has sparked conversations among residents and mixed emotions for some who believe the street’s historical significance will be lost. Lynwood Drive in Rockingham, Halifax, is among three streets with the same name in the municipality, including ones in Dartmouth and Brookside. The decision to rename the Rockingham location was made due to concerns about delayed emergency response and confusion among residents and visitors caused by multiple streets with the same name.

The Rockingham Lynwood Drive was chosen for renaming as it has the fewest number of residents, with 14 addresses, compared to 23 in Dartmouth and 37 in Brookside. However, some residents argue that the numerical count should not be the sole consideration in this decision.

Patricia Arab, a long-time resident with family ties to the street dating back to the 1950s, expressed sadness at the prospect of losing the street’s connection to the early Lebanese immigrant community. She initiated an online petition to preserve the Lynwood Drive name, gathering over 350 signatures in support. Despite the city’s criteria for renaming streets based on costs, historical relevance, and public safety, Arab and others believe the heritage and community ties should also be valued.

Residents on Lynwood Drive in Rockingham have varied opinions on the potential name change. While some, like Luke Woodhead, find the duplication of addresses inconvenient and support the renaming for clarity and safety reasons, others feel attached to the street’s identity and history. The renaming process involves residents suggesting new names, with “Meow Drive” among the proposed options, sparking discussions and differing opinions among neighbors.

Councillor Kathryn Morse explained that the renaming efforts aim to reduce street name duplication in the municipality, with Lynwood Drive being a priority due to concerns raised by residents about mail mix-ups and emergency services delays. The decision on the new street name will be voted on by the council after a report is produced by municipal staff. Morse highlighted that residents of renamed streets are offered free Canada Post mail redirection services for a year.

The renaming of Lynwood Drive reflects broader efforts to address duplicated street names in Halifax Regional Municipality, with 45 names appearing three or more times and 258 names duplicated once. The final decision on the new street name is expected to be made in the coming year, following community input and council approval.
