ABC has given the green light to a new spinoff of the popular medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, this time set in the rugged landscape of West Texas. The upcoming series, expected to debut in the 2026-2027 season, has received a “straight to series order,” bypassing the traditional pilot episode.

The show will focus on a team at a rural medical center in West Texas, described as the last hope for care before vast stretches of wilderness. The choice of setting has generated mixed reactions among fans, with some speculating on potential connections to the original series, which saw characters scattered across Boston, Switzerland, and Paris.

While some questioned the Texas backdrop, others welcomed the change from the familiar Seattle setting of Grey’s Anatomy. The spinoff will retain the creative leadership of Shonda Rhimes, the mastermind behind the original series, who will co-create and executive produce the new show alongside Meg Marinis. Ellen Pompeo, a long-standing star of Grey’s Anatomy, will also serve as an executive producer alongside Rhimes collaborator Betsy Beers.

Details on how closely the spinoff will tie into the original series or whether familiar faces will make appearances are yet to be revealed. Marinis expressed enthusiasm for expanding the Grey’s Anatomy universe with new characters and narratives that capture the essence of the long-running show, all within the backdrop of her home state, Texas.

The upcoming series, a collaboration between Shondaland and 20th Television, marks the fourth spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy, following Private Practice, Station 19, and Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team.
