“Beware: Surge in Rebuilt Cars with Hidden Histories”

Share

In the realm of second-hand car purchasing, prospective buyers should be cautious of the surge in demand leading to a proliferation of rebuilt vehicles with undisclosed histories, according to experts in the automotive industry. Rebuilt cars are those that have been reconstructed following significant damage from accidents or natural disasters like hailstorms or floods.

Stuart Klein, the Vice President of Collision Programs at the Automotive Industries Association of Canada, explained that a vehicle being labeled as “rebuilt” signifies that an insurance company had previously declared it a total loss due to damage that exceeded its pre-damage value. While a written-off car may be sold to salvage yards for parts or restoration, dealerships are mandated to disclose a car’s rebuilt status, unlike private sellers on platforms such as Facebook Marketplace.

Nancy Shadlock, a Calgary resident, unknowingly purchased a rebuilt 2010 Nissan Cube for $5,000 from a Kijiji seller in 2021. Despite the vehicle’s attractive price and low mileage, Shadlock only discovered its rebuilt status upon registration, prompting a sense of frustration but opting not to contest the purchase.

Regarding safety, the complexity of modern car technology, especially in models from 2016 onward, poses challenges for accurate repairs post-accident. Klein highlighted that intricate systems like blind-spot detectors necessitate precise recalibration to prevent malfunctions that could jeopardize driver safety.

Insurance coverage for rebuilt vehicles varies, with some companies offering only liability coverage or requiring thorough inspections and documentation before providing full coverage. Sherif Gemayel, an insurance expert, emphasized that drivers must disclose a car’s rebuilt status to insurers, with professionally rebuilt vehicles holding an advantage in obtaining coverage.

Despite the risks associated with rebuilt cars, market trends show a growing interest in these vehicles due to rising prices of used cars. While data on rebuilt car sales is scarce, estimates suggest they sell at a discounted rate compared to equivalent used vehicles. The prevalence of rebuilt cars is on the rise, with consumers advised to check vehicle histories through services like CARFAX before making purchases.

Shadlock’s experience with her rebuilt Nissan Cube was unexpectedly positive, proving reliable over the years and retaining value despite its aerodynamic limitations. She highlighted the importance of due diligence in future private purchases, emphasizing the value of checking vehicle histories to mitigate potential risks.
