Calgary’s election official has given the green light for Sonya Sharp’s request for a vote recount in the mayoral race. The recount is scheduled for Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Big Four Roadhouse, where all votes from voting stations will be reexamined. Any alterations to the official results will be communicated by the election official.
The approval for the recount came on Friday evening shortly after Sharp formally submitted her application for a recount. In a statement, Sharp emphasized that the purpose of the request is to enhance trust in the electoral process. She had previously indicated her intention to pursue a recount within the framework of the law, but the method she would adopt under new regulations introduced by the provincial government was uncertain.
Sharp clarified that she had formally requested the recount under the Local Authorities Election Act on Friday, following the city’s publication of the official results earlier that day. She mentioned a recent council race in Ward sipiwiyiniwak in Edmonton, where a recount led to a significant change in the outcome due to administrative or technical errors.
Sharp stressed the importance of recounting votes to maintain public confidence in elections, stating that it is crucial for Calgarians to have faith that every vote is accurately counted. The official results showed Jeromy Farkas winning the mayoral race with 91,071 votes, defeating Sharp by a margin of 581 votes.
Despite the close margin between Farkas and Sharp, there have been questions regarding the recount process and the interpretation of the Local Authorities Election Act. Sharp expressed hope that regardless of the recount’s outcome, it would prompt necessary revisions to the election legislation to ensure clarity and consistency in recount procedures.
Pollster Janet Brown from Calgary remarked that Sharp’s request for a recount was reasonable given the tight race, emphasizing the importance of ensuring accuracy in close elections to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
