The Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) New Democratic Party has decided not to appoint an official leader until the upcoming leadership convention. Ann Braithwaite has been chosen to take over from party president Dr. Herb Dickieson and will lead the party until the convention in February. This resolution was reached during the party’s annual general meeting in Summerside.

Braithwaite, a professor at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), expressed readiness to face the challenges of her new role. She mentioned being inspired by global political changes and a desire to engage herself in new ways. Despite not having a strong interest in electoral politics in the past, Braithwaite emphasized her passion for organizing and building communities, aiming to ensure better representation for all individuals.

The former party leader, Michelle Neill, announced her resignation in late August, having served in the position since April 2022. The P.E.I. NDP currently does not hold any seats in the legislative assembly. The leadership convention is scheduled for February 7.
